Saturday, September 21st, 2013: Display Day and Astronaut Rex Walheim Day

Next Saturday, September 21st brings two terrific events to the Petaluma Airport:

  • Our monthly Aircraft Display Day from 10 am to 4 pm, Admission free, and
  • Astronaut Rex Walheim Day, at 2 pm, Admission $10, kids under 12 free.

Don’t miss either one!

On July 8, 2011, Space Shuttle Atlantis rose from a plume of fire and parted the high clouds on its way to the International Space Station and to its place in history. The liftoff marked the last time a space shuttle would soar toward the heavens. Come hear the story of the final flight of the Space Shuttle from Astronaut Rex Walhiem at the Petaluma Airport. Walhiem, a veteran of three Space Shuttle Missions was chosen as one of only four Astronauts to take part in the final historic mission. Mr. Walheim will come to Petaluma where the first airmail flight was made in 1911.

The City of Petaluma will honor Astronaut Walheim on Saturday September 21, 2013. The date is significant to the north bay as it coincides with Space Shuttle Endeavor’s final flyover the bay area (September 21,2012). The day will begin at 1pm with the Petaluma Fire Department escorting Rex through the downtown to conclude at the Petaluma Airport for a 2pm presentation where representatives of the City Council will proclaim “Astronaut Rex Walheim Day” in Petaluma. Walheim, one of NASA’s top astronauts has flown three missions, STS-110, STS-122 and STS-135. STS-135 was the 135th and final mission of NASA’s Space Shuttle Program. The mission was accomplished in 200 orbits of the Earth, traveling 5,284,862 miles in 12 days, 18 hours, 27 minutes and 56 seconds. A veteran Astronaut, Rex has logged over 566 hours in space, including over 36 hours and 23 minutes of EVA time.

The event will feature Airport Display Day which will feature numerous vintage and rare aircraft on display. A raffle will be held for a free airplane ride, signed NASA memorabilia as well as shuttle images by Academy Award winner George Murphy. Refreshments will be served. Proceeds of the event will benefit the Petaluma Area Pilots Association (PAPA) school scholarship program.
